The storyline, which was outlined earlier this month, has been teed up in several recent scenes on the BBC soap, with the much-loved character exhibiting signs of persistent tiredness around Walford.

Denise recently saw the GP, who said that she had an iron deficiency. She continually struggles with tiredness throughout this week, and will later undertake a blood test, which officially kicks the storyline off.

In next week’s developments, Denise receives a call from the hospital following the blood test, and is asked to take a bone marrow test the following morning. She tries to put on a brave face, but is evidently worried.

She decides to head to the appointment alone instead of leaning on a friend, and later receives the results of her test. She is told by a doctor that she has blood cancer, and is understandably shocked at the diagnosis.

While it remains to be seen what the future holds for Denise, Diane Parish recently sat down for an exclusive interview with Inside Soap, where she discussed her character’s immediate reaction to the devastating diagnosis.

“It pulls the rug out from under her,” said the actor. “This is life-changing. Denise is the one who takes care of everyone and is always strong, now she’s facing something with an uncertain, possibly quite bleak, outcome, and it’s a complete shock.

“Denise is always in the thick of things, she’s a busybody! The idea of having to be isolated from other people to protect herself is a huge challenge, as is that loss of control and not being at the head of her family.

“Life carries on for everyone else, while she is forced to have this massive pause,” added the actor, who joined the soap in 2006. “Joyful things are happening around her, and Denise’s reality becomes wondering whether she will be around to see them.”
